Team History

Sauber debuted in F1 in the Kyalami Grand Prix in 1993 and saw Sauber come in at 6th place in Constructor’s title, in an average season. In fact ‘average’ became a word synonymous with Sauber. In 1994 Sauber finished the season with 12 points and 11 points in 1995. However Heinz Herald Frentzen did recorded the first podium position in Monza in that 1995 season. 1996 brought another podium place and 18-point end of season total.

1997 was an important year in Sauber's history as they formed an association with Petronas to supply their engines, after mixed relationships with Mercedes and Ford. However the new partnership did not affect the level of Saubers performances, in a season that reaped 16 points and 1 podium place. 1998 achievements included one more podium place and coming in sixth in constructor’s title. The 1999-2000 seasons were dismal gaining only 5 and 6 points respectively.

Kimi Raikkonen joined the team in 2001, and to date is Sauber’s best season. Sauber finished up 4th in the Driver’s Championship in a season that included only 1 podium in Brazil but an excellent score of top six position performances by Heidfeld and Raikkonen all season. However the upturn was short-lived.

In 2002 Felipe Massa replaced Raikkonen but made little impact in another average season. 2003 saw Sauber achieve 19 points and finish 6th in the Driver’s Championship and accumulate a fifth podium position thanks to Frentzen.

2004 sees Sauber launch the new Wind Tunnel Project that could potentially elevate performance levels.
