Team History
Minardi debuted in Formula 1 in 1985 and experienced a rough season
managing to complete only 2 races. Ever since Minardi has struggled
in the F1 tournament. In 1988 Pierluigi Martini finished in 6th
place in Detroit and recorded Minardi's first ever point. Since
then a sorry pattern has emerged with Minardi scoring only one or
zero points in a whole season.
The exception was the period between 1993-1994. In 1993 with driver’s
Christian Fittipaldi and Fabrizio Barbazza, Minardi recorded its
best ever season finish (to date) recording 7 points and coming
8th in the Constructor's Title. In 1994 with driver's Pierluigi
Martini and Michele Alboreto, Minardi managed to obtain 5 points
in the season. The team being unable to build on this success and
returned to old form in the following seasons.
1999 was a real crisis year and it looked as though Minardi may
have to exit F1, as the team could not secure an engine deal. However
at the last minute Ford bailed them out. However poor performance
again saw an end to that relationship. In fact the next few seasons
were characterised by Minardi struggling to find an engine supplier
or sponsors. The stresses of management politics team being exaggerated
by dismal performances on the track.
In 2001 Paul Stoddart acquired Minardi and merged the team with
European Formula Racing, hoping that new expertise and management
could turn the fortunes of Minardi. However 2002 was a disappointment
with team accruing only 2 points and 2003 even harsher ending the
season with no points.
