Team History
In 1951 Froilan Gonzalez recorded Ferrari's first F1 Grand Prix
win at Silverstone. Thereafter success seem tied to Ferrari with
Alberto Ascari winning the Driver's Title in 1952 and 1953, both
times in the 500F2. 1955 was a year of tragedy for Ferrari in which
Alberto Ascari died in a test race. 1957 saw Ferrari return to glory
with Juan Manuel Fangio taking the Driver's title in a series where
he achieved 3 wins in the Maserati 250F.
1961 was another record year with Ferrari taking both the Driver's
and Constructor’s Titles with the 156F1. 1964 saw Ferrari
pick up another Driver's Title with John Surtees in the 158F1. After
this point, success began to slow for Ferrari. In fact Ferrari recorded
the worst ever year in 1969 gaining only 7 points.
It was not until 1975 that Ferrari picked up the next Driver's
title with Niki Lauda who individually took 5 wins that season.
In 1976 Niki Lauda suffered a horrific crash that also denied him
the title. However Lauda recovered impressively and reclaimed the
title in 1977. 1979 saw Jody Schekter add another Driver’s
title to Ferrari’s already impressive collection.
The start of the 1980's was somewhat slow by Ferrari's standards,
however optimism grew with the signing of the talented Giles Villeneuve
and his obtaining 2 wins in 1981. But tragedy returned to Ferrari
with the death of Giles Villeneuve in a practice test in 1981. However
Ferrari took some solace in winning the Constructor’s title
in that season for the 126C2.
But after this point the Ferrari cars technical progress fell significantly
in comparison to that of McLaren, Lotus and Williams. In fact Ferrari
experienced a very lean period of achievement. In 1989 Ferrari did
raise technical standards introducing the F1189 model. The car won
the Constructor’s title and was the car in which Nigel Mansell
obtained 3 wins that season.
1990 saw Ferrari continue in previous form and make a positive
start, with Prost taking 5 wins and Nigel Mansell one other. But
the upturn was short-lived.
It was not till 1996 when Michael
Schumacher signed did Ferrari really start to make an impact
on the F1 scene again. Immediately taking 3 wins in the 1996 season
Schumacher
renewed optimism for Ferrari. Schumacher
produced 5 wins in 1997 but was deprived of the title because of
an illegal manoeuvre and finished as runner-up. Another highly competitive
season followed with Schumacher
again runner-up having produced 6 wins. 1998 also saw the Ferrari
team collectively tally a fantastic 133 points. 1999 confirmed the
cars return to technical supremacy by winning the Constructor's
title.
2000 was Ferrari's record year taking a total of 170 points, winning
the Driver's Title and Constructor Title. In fact Michael
Schumacher achieved a total of 9 wins to that take the Driver’s
Title. 2002 saw Michael
Schumacher take the Driver's Title again, this time with 17
podium positions that included 11 wins. The same result followed
in 2003 with Michael
Schumacher taking the Title again and in convincing style.
